Did you know that Rock Doves were bred like chickens are today for their their meat and eggs. Like chickens, they were bred to encourage regular menstration (eggs are birds' periods). When chickens replaced pigeons, the farmed pigeons were relealed en masse into the wild. Naturally breeding on cliffs, pigeons saw cities as cliffs, which is why they gather there to this day. Bred close to humans for so long in the past, they are still semi tame to this day. Here are a few Swansea pigeons hanging out outside Tesco Marina.
